Scruff is a 2000 Spanish animated TV series by D'ocon Films.^[1] The series is based off a 1993 book by Josep Vallverdú.^[2] It depicts the life of a puppy, Scruff, who is adopted by a farmer named Peter. The show was directed by Antoni D'Ocon and distributed in English by BKN. The animation is rendered using Toon Boom's Harmony software, through a method of creating traditional 2D animated characters over a 3Dcomputer-generated background.

Premise[edit]

Setting[edit]

Following the loss of a tourist family's puppy, a long forest search ensues. The puppy is eventually located and adopted by a young country worker named Peter. The puppy is taken to Peter's aunt and uncle's farmhouse and is given the name Scruff. As Scruff spends time with Peter and his relatives, they discover his skills, which include acrobatics, and the ability to sniff out various forest fruits.

Scruff lives amidst livestock, poultry, and two other dogs named Sanda and Tricks, who become his family over time. Each episode features a new adventure for Scruff. He learns about the farm through the animals and pets, and about the forest with the wild animals. In the village, he meets human beings.

Characters[edit]

• Scruff – A young pup with boundless curiosity. His inquisitive nature sometimes gets him into a lot of trouble. He is a pointer mix puppy from a foreign land and not good at tracking and guarding. However, he has a handful of unusual skills, such as acrobatics and sniffing out forest fruits.
• Strummer – A flea who lives on Scruff, often providing him with advice. He plays the guitar and once lived on a circus dog. Scruff normally gets annoyed with him and abandons the parasite.
• Peter – Scruff's owner, who shares a lot of personality points with his pet. He dreams of being in a circus.
• Uncle Ron and Aunt Lil – Peter's aunt and uncle, the owners of Tolosa Farm. They are a standard, almost stereotypical, farm couple.
• Sanda – The most mature dog on the farm, she serves as the watchdog/tracker for the owners. When Scruff arrived on the farm, Sanda took him in as her adoptive son. She has a kind heart, but Scruff sometimes pushes her to her limits. She is a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever.
• Tricks – Sanda's son and Scruff's best friend. Even though he and Scruff are friends, he occasionally gets jealous of him. Nonetheless, he is still Scruff's partner in many of his antics. He is a Vizsla puppy.
• Miaow – Is Uncle Ron and Aunt Lil's pet cat. He has little love for the dogs on the farm, especially Scruff.
• White Socks – A fox who lives in the forest near the farm. He is said to be an endangered species of fox, and many hunters try to catch him, but fail constantly. He calls many of the farm animals fools, knowing nothing about the wild world. Although selfish and unscrupulous, he does have a soft spot for Scruff, helping him on many occasions. He is said to have a crush on Sanda in the episode, 'Can't Cope'.
• Haunty The Hound – The 300-year-old ghost of a hound dog who haunts the farmhouse cellar. He is a ghostly Beagle mix. Only Scruff, Strummer, and later, White Socks, are aware of his existence. He has an interesting outlook on life, due to living with wild and domesticated animals in his past life.
• Holly – Peter's girlfriend, a kindly and down-to-earth person. She is sometimes irritated by Peter's impulsive behavior, but deep down, loves him very much.
• Princess – Holly's pet dog, a Pumi. Originally shown as haughty and stuck-up, she later falls in love with Scruff.
• Mr. Canute – Holly's father. A rich man, who deeply disapproves of the working-class and Peter's relationship with his daughter.
• Buttons – A mushroom vendor, who tries to make money through any means, legal or illegal. Unfortunately, that means he always tries to capture Scruff and export him to scientific research.
• Truffles – Buttons' mushroom-sniffing dog, a Bouvier des Flandres. Truffles doesn't agree with his master's unscrupulous activities, but stays with him out of loyalty. He later has a romantic relationship with Sanda.
• One-Man Circus – A crooked clown. He is obsessed with kidnapping Scruff, because he is a rare breed of dog. He wants to make him into the star attraction of his circus.
• The Rats – A gang of rodents who prowl around the farm area, making trouble for anyone who runs into them.

Home video[edit]

A set of six DVDs were released between 2005 and 2007 by Image Entertainment. These DVDs don't have captions. The next line of Scruff DVDs were released in September and November 2009. Recently, the entire second season has been released on a 4-Disc set. Currently, all 69 of the episodes are available on disc.^[3][4][5] The new line of Scruff DVDs, feature Scruff's five television movies.^[6]

SCRUFF is an international social application for gay, bisexual men that runs on iOS and Android devices.^[1] The app allows users to upload profiles and photos, and search for other members by location and shared interests. Users can directly message other users or they can use the app's “Woof” feature, which allows users to express interest in another user's profile.

As of 2019, the app has approximately 15+ million members worldwide^[2] with SCRUFF downloads taking place throughout 180 countries and six continents.^[3][4] The app has been translated into 10 languages including Spanish, Portuguese, German, French, Chinese, and Arabic.^[4][5]

The app is free to download. Users can opt to purchase a paid membership, Scruff Pro, to access additional features.^[6]

The company was founded in 2010 by Johnny Skandros and Eric Silverberg, now its CEO.^[3]

In 2013, the app added a community for HIV-positive users called 'Poz.' Scruff was the first app to include options for members of the military and transgender community.^[7]

In October, 2015, the company launched Scruff Version 5, which included new communities, relationship types, sex preferences, and safety practices.

In 2018, Scruff stopped using third-party programmatic ads, such as banner ads, and moved to a revenue model based on subscriptions and direct advertising.^[8] Company CEO Eric Silverberg said that the decision was based on concerns about “shady advertising,”^[9] as well as user safety and privacy, particularly in regions or countries where homophobia is still widespread.^[5][10]

As of August 2018, Scruff does not require members to provide information about race or ethnicity.^[10] CEO Eric Silverberg said the decision will help the company “ensure that harassment, racism, and abuse doesn’t happen.”^[11]

In January 2019, after multiple suspensions from Google Play, Scruff announced that it was banning profile photos featuring “sexually suggestive embraces” or members in their underwear or in swimming trunks.^[12]

Scruff launched a live-streaming trivia game show called “Hosting” in March 2019. Users compete for cash prizes by answering LGBT-themed pop culture and history questions through the Scruff app. They can also view and send “Woof” notifications to other players.^[13][14]

In 2014, the company won several mobile app awards including Time Out New York's Best App Award.^[7][10]

In 2018, Scruff was included in Digital Trends’ list of “Best LGBT dating apps for Android and iOS.'^[15]

In 2018, The Daily Dot named Scruff as one of the “9 best dating sites and apps for gay men.”^[10]

TechRadar included Scruff on its list of “best dating apps 2019.'^[16]

Safety, awareness and security[edit]

In 2015, the company added a traveler alert feature that notifies users when they reach one of approximately 100 countries where homosexuality is criminalized, sends alerts to members about immediate safety concerns in these regions, and partners with the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA), on a web page identifying anti-gay laws in such countries.^[3]

In 2018, Scruff CEO Eric Silverberg said that Scruff has no plans to integrate with Facebook due to concerns about privacy and data mining.^[10]

Operations[edit]

Using geolocation, the home interface displays a grid of user profile pictures, arranged from nearest to farthest away. Tapping a picture opens a users’ profile displaying options to chat, send a 'Woof,' save profiles, and unlock private photos, videos, and other information from the user.

Features[edit]

• The travel-focused “Venture” service allows users to browse popular travel destinations around the world, meet up with other users, RSVP to local events, and search for accommodations. Venture also includes a chat function that connects users to local “ambassadors” who can provide suggestions about where to go and what to do in more than 500 destinations.^[10][13]
• The 'Woof' option enables members to express interest by 'woofing' at another member as an alternate choice to directly messaging them.^[13]
• The “Stealth Mode” feature uses GPS obfuscation to hide a user's location if a member chooses that option for their privacy or protection.^[15]
• Match: This feature allows users to use a photo swipe for members specifically seeking relationships.^[10]
• Insights: Allows users to see statistics based on a certain users’ responsiveness towards other communities within the app.

The company unveiled an ad campaign on a billboard just outside Super Bowl XLIX that read 'Play On Our Team' to encourage acceptance of gay professional athletes.^[17]
