► Tell us about you and your podcast
My name is Jose Angel Rincon and i am from Tijuana, Mexico. Since 1994 i have been involved with the Tijuana Music Scene. I started with fanzines and from then evolving into new forms od DIY media, but my dream was having my own radio show. Then i started being involved in Internet Radio and since 2006 i have being podcasting...i was one of the first 'tijuanians' to explore the format.

The name of my podcast is En Tijuana Hay Rock Radio. Basically, it's a indie rock music show, giving a plataform to local Tijuana bands and showcasing whats going on wij other music scenes. We recommend shows, some news and giving information about other regional brands that work around the indie music scene.
I think it took a certain time, but we hit our stride with people that want to listen to new bands, new sounds. It's people that love music and are very supportive of the bands we play...
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I was doing in 2005 Internet Radio with a show on a station called Bulbo Broadcast,i learned there about 'that podcast thing'. I truly wanted to do something with that, but even the tech guy st the station downplayed as 'that RSS code thing, it's not a big deal'. I started to gather information and doing my own research, when one day, someone from the station asked me if i want to try out recording a demo for one and then we did it,i see that it was not that hard compared to the equipment to do radio/web radio.
Another thing that attracted me was the creative freedom, being your one man band and be more yourself, not being strained by a clock or someone telling you what to say and do, it was the perfect situation for me and also, getting to play the music and bands that i wanted to play without worries.
I started my podcast months after leaving the station. I did not hesitate that much,dince i was hungry to try this finally and since then, i have not stopped, but there has been some changes in the way.
As a listener, i try not to listen that much to another music podcast, only a few. I mostly go for interview ones and since i am a huge fan of Pro Wrestling, those are my go to pods, the ones about an historic perspective and analysis.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
I always have done a weekly show and because of issues, i always have done it by seasons, you now, stuff happens. This current season i am doing two shows a week, because of the music i get in my inbox and also becase of interviews.
The shows that feature music are around 40 minutes (and that is because i am a long speaker, sorry) and i try to set the interview shows at 30 minutes. I do some special shpws that run longer, but those are special occasions.
I always try to do them ay night, more relaxed,sometimes depends the situation. I am not someone that has a board and a calendar, i mostly just do a list of the songs and some random notes and i just balance the time...i try to use it wisely, but not leave something out, for me, everything count.
This podcast is a totally DIY operation since the start, just a mic, some headphones, my PC and Audicity, try to do it with the most i have. There are sometimes that i think that i should take it to the other level and maybe get some sponsors, but the culture of podcasting it's not the same around here than in other places, so it's a little hard, so i have to operate by myself, but is a passion project, i love it.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
Like i said before, it's a very different culture and approach,so you mostly get some help from friends that share your work. I tried many times to share with people what the podcasting culture is all about, i even was invited to a summit and gave a lecture about it and done a workshop in a community center..but there is a modest surge around here and i hope for the people that are coming after me, can do better...i just can hope.
I am doing ok....monthly i am doing right now 8 shows...each show goes around a hundred listens/downloads, that means that monthly were having about 800 a month...not big numbers, but not bad for a small DIY show from Tijuana.
Podcasting has teach me a lot of knowledge to do my own work in the promotional part and has made push harder in building my brand in other phases as videos, e-magazines...has open me doors to other markets around the world,knowing peoplw,bands, promoters...grassroots networking.Because of this, i have been invited to work alongside another indie plataform to boost the show and also with a group of indie media brands to do some stuff....real cool things happen...i think it has been fine.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
Well, i use Audacity, it's an amazing free program and it has help me a lot. My PC is a Lenovo and i use a cheap condense USB mic and some Sony headphones...i truly have got lucky...I would love to have a more sophisticated work station, but i am ok.
Some of my guests approach me because they have listened or learned about the show or are friends that i wanted to do the interview. I got very nervious before, but now i have relaxed. I read a little bit of info and i let the interview flow, i get bullet points and i rather get into a more chit chat than grilling someone. I learned to be decent at least.
I approach each episode as a playlist, i order the songs, talk a little bit of info anout the artists or talk about news, sometimes i go longer that i should. I try to do one take, maybe some stuff here of there, but each show takes me less than an hour to tape, i have learned to be quick.
I do not do live interviews, i mostly tape them for technical reasons...i am still finding the best technical way to get them better...i go trough phone or Google Meet...that is something i am trying yo get better at.
► How do you market your show?
I try to get my show on every possible platform from Apple to Listen Notes. I so a preview post trough social media and then post the show. The main one is Facebook, since all my main target is there, but i go the main social ones. I just made my Linktree list, that has get off some haedaches to be honest.
My main server is Ivoox, so that is my main data breakdown...i think i have to work more in researching the data, since i have another shows in the works and also there is a possible launching of a local podcast network, so, i have to do some more research.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Study a lot, learn what others are doing, try and listen here and there, even of something different that you are doing. Learn to know your market and define if is a fun project or a life changing possibility.
Reading and learning should be top priority and also, it's different to other media...some poeple thing that it's just talk, but no, you need to work on your technique, your rythym...you will find your voice sooner or later, but work for it.

I have done this for, if you will, a long time...and i am still learning, still discovering stuff, i think i am just scratching the surface of what i can do better, but i am glad for it, i wont change this for nothing else.
